About TastyKake
We started with an abandoned industrial site and reused the buildings as foundation material for our new bakery. This avoided clearing a forest and reduced construction waste.
We then built our bakery with several features that earned it LEED Silver Certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and it is awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is a rating system for green buildings.
The following features of Tasty Baking’s Navy Yard bakery are included in the LEED standards:
- A white, reflective roof that minimizes heat-absorbing surfaces, which contribute to global warming
- No-mow, drought-resistant grass that uses less water
- Half of the wood used in the building and all the wood doors come from certified sustainable sources that work to conserve trees
- Paint and carpeting with low chemical content that reduce ear, nose and throat irritation
- Covered parking lot lights that reduce light pollution
- Bike racks and access to public transportation that reduce vehicle usage and pollution
Inside our new bakery, we chose gas as an energy source (which is better for the environment than the electricity we used at our old bakery), and we installed a heat-recycling system that reduces the amount of energy needed to bake our cakes.
A healthy environment is good for all of us. At Tasty, we work to conserve natural resources and are always looking for ways to improve our use of those resources. We encourage our team members to reduce waste whenever possible. At TastyKake, we also package our products in recyclable cartons and cases, which save trees.
We believe these actions make us a better and stronger company.
My Thoughts
This summer TastyKake introduced some new products. I was lucky enough to get to try out some of them. My family tried 2 different donuts, a sweet roll and a Kandy kake. The donuts we tried were Birthday Cake and Blueberry. The Birthday Cake donuts were not iced, but rather filled with sprinkles. The flavor was still great, even without icing or coating! The Blueberry donuts were the biggest hit, lasting just over a day..haha. When we first got them, my husband said “I don’t know about this.” It turns out, he loved them! They had a great blueberry flavor, and they were coated in powdered sugar.
The Blueberry Sweet Rolls had the same effect as the blueberry donuts. We fell in love with them right away. They weren’t overly sweet, but rather a nice, pleasant taste. The rolls are a nice size, and filled us up nicely. They had blueberry swirled through them like a cinnamon roll, and were coated in a yummy glaze.
My personal favorite was the Orange Cream Kandy Kake Snack Cakes. I expected them to be overwhelming with the orange flavor, but to my surprise and delight, they weren’t! They taste like Orange Creamsicle, and are simply delicious! They have a light orange flavor, and are coated in a yummy white icing. You get 3 small cakes per package, making these great to send in a school lunch!
Overall, we are very happy with TastyKake, and will definitely be purchasing more of these!
